Book Recommendation: Analog Synthesizers

Analog Synthesizers: Understanding, Performing, Buying- from the legacy of Moog to software synthesis by Mark Jenkins. I'll preface this by saying I haven't actually read this one yet, but my friend Jim came by the other day after he had picked it up on a whim and it looks really cool. Lots of gear porn and quite a bit of information for synth geeks. Hadn't heard anyone talking about it, so I thought I would mention it here...

OK. This book is a really good place to start with Analog synths. Johnny's Fisrt Synth book. It begins with a clear explanation of sound, waveforms and the basic synth modules. Then progresses through an overview of how you put them all together to makes sounds. There is a history of the major brands names, a lot of useful information about famous artists and the gear that they used, a list of major synths with a price guide, and an audio CD demonstrating programming ideas as well as what sorts of sounds certain vintage synths were famous for. All around it is a very good book and even old pro's may find a nugget of wisdom here and there. Well worth owning.
