Ex-Ableton Employees Start New Company

This isn't exactly new news, but if it got any press coverage, I sure missed it. At any rate, a number of ex-Ableton employees have started their own company called Bitwig, aimed at providing "next generation" music applications. Here's what they have to say:

"Within the virtual environment of a computer anything is possible, yet on a fundamental level, the way music is created today with computers is still very similar to how hardware studios were used. With an entirely new approach, we want to take the next step in the evolution of the computer music studio and create the music software we always wanted to use ourselves.

Bitwig is based in Berlin and founded by Claes Johanson, Pablo Sara, Nicholas Allen and Volker Schumacher. Our experience in the computer music software industry includes Ableton, where we were all part of the development team behind the successful music software Live, and Vember Audio, creator of the critically acclaimed software synthesizer Surge."

Alert readers may recognize the name Claes Johanson as one half of the band Burikusu!!!, who also happen to be signed to the record label I run.

OMG, thank you so much for leaving Ableton and doing it the right way. I have never been so disappointed with any music software in m life. I dont know how I managed to stick it out for 4 years. Being a Cubase user since the 90's, I would have frequent anxiety in the studio & live because of ableton's short-comings. The fact that Bitwig uses automation for clips, there's no confliction between using loops and using a linear recording mode. That is a no brainer. lol. Im just hoping for the extra sweet features like device management for bi-directional midi control for data feedback, simple slicing and shifting audio, cross fades, time-stretching midi notes, an XY pad with smoothing, a peak controller, and a way to start tracks without a predefined tempo or click track. I love the look of better channel meters and color scheme . The fact that they are supporting linux is my main selling point. there are so many cheap old used PC laptops everywhere that can run excellent benchmarks speeds on VST's due to the small instruction sets of the Linux OS. For now, crossing my pennies and pinching my fingers.
